Tom Parker is a British photographer with a penchant for travel – having now worked in over 50 countries around the world. He lived in Mumbai from 2008-2011, first working as a freelancer, and then from 2010 as the photo-editor of Condé Nast Traveller India, launching Asia’s first edition of the magazine. During his numerous assignments and travels in India, Parker embarked on a personal project documenting the major ‘old’ and ‘new’ industries in the country. This comparative study explores and reveals the backbone to India’s demographic shift. Old industries such as coal mining, textiles, steel manufacture and salt production are moving towards the periphery as information technology, energy, biotechnology, construction and the entertainment industries come to fore. In both series, Parker has captured the sense of potential and power that is thick in the air in his clear, direct and lucid way – creating an uncluttered space for the viewer to ponder the deeper social, human and cultural fallout of such industries.
Tom Parker grew up in the salubrious climes of the Cotswolds, UK, which fuelled an early appetite for beautiful places. After a brief flirtation with the Financial world, he relocated to Nepal to write for an independent newspaper. High on the Himalayan plateau he discovered photography and a love for travel.
After completing a Journalism Masters at City University Tom then explored his own country as reporter for BBC Radio 4 and began shooting for newspapers in London. In 2004 he was drawn back to Asia, basing himself in Sri Lanka for three years where he covered the tsunami as a photographer, BBC radio journalist and writer.
After spending three years in India, he returned to the UK in 2010 but remains a contributing photographer for Condé Nast Traveller India and Architectural Digest India.
His work appears regularly in international publications including Condé Nast Traveller (UK, India), Condé Nast Traveler (US), Departures Magazine (US), Vogue (Australia, India), GQ, GEO, House and Garden, Sunday Times Travel Magazine, WIRED (UK), Guardian, Independent, Marie Claire (France).
His shoots a wide range of commercial work both in the UK and internationally and loves to work with new clients on challenging commissions. His photographs are held in private and corporate collections in Asia and Europe.
